Added descriptor for builtins.open.__doc__
Before the change help(open) didn't return anything helpful but the doc string of io.OpenWrapper. Now it shows the user the documentation of io.open.
This is probably what was meant here.

Several Windows related cleanups:
* Removed a #define from pyconfig.h. The macro was already defined a few lines higher.
* Fixed path to tix in the build_tkinter.py script
* Changed make_buildinfo.c to use versions of unlink and strcat which are considered safe by Windows (as suggested by MvL).
* Removed two defines from pyproject.vsprops that are no longer required. Both are defined in pyconfig.h and make_buildinfo.c doesn't use the unsafe versions any more (as suggested by MvL).
* Added some more information about PGO and the property files to PCbuild9/readme.txt.

Fix the leaks in test_ssl. Issue 1469. Patch by Christian Heimes:
(a) added GC support to the PySSL object
(b) move the call to _real_close() from __del__ methods in Python to
PySSL_dealloc().
(c) remove those __del__ methods -- this makes SSL and socket objects GC'able.
Fix the rest of issue 1400, by introducing a proper implementation of
line buffering. The TextIOWrapper class no longer calls isatty() on
every write() call.

The macros _WIN32, _WIN64 and _M_X64 are defined by the compiler. The VS 2008 IDE doesn't know about (some) of the macros and can display wrong information. In my case a section #ifdef _WIN64 was grayed out although the platform was x64. I've added the macros to pyproject.vsprops and x64.vsprops.
I've also added a paragraph about the property files to the readme and fixed the order of pyupdate > pyinstrument.

This "fixes" compilation issues for the Carbon._OSA module on OSX Leopard
by purging bindings to OSA's debug API's. Those APIs we're completely
unsupported on OSX 10.4 and are no longer available on OSX 10.5.
Note that this patches a generated file. This is somewhat acceptable because
regenerating the file is non-trivial and wouldn't use system headers anyway.

Solve issue 1400 at least in part -- whenever we run Python code, at the end
we also flush stderr and stdout. (XXX this may override errors if there's a problem
flushing.)
Removed PyInt_GetMax and sys.maxint
I replaced sys.maxint with sys.maxsize in Lib/*.py. Does anybody see a problem with the change on Win 64bit platforms? Win 64's long is just 32bit but the sys.maxsize is now 2**63-1 on every 64bit platform.
Also added docs for sys.maxsize.
Removed another occurrence of PyInt_ExactCheck()
I've modified the semantic of PyTraceBack_Print and sys.tracebacklimit slightly. Overfloats or values <= 0 are replaced with a default value to avoid infinite recursion and other issues.

Applied my patch #1455 with some extra fixes for VS 2005
The new msvc9compiler module supports VS 2005 and VS 2008. I've also fixed build_ext to support PCbuild8 and PCbuild9 and backported my fix for xxmodule.c from py3k. The old code msvccompiler is still in place in case somebody likes to build an extension with VS 2003 or earlier.
I've also updated the cygwin compiler module for VS 2005 and VS 2008. It works with VS 2005 but I'm unable to test it with VS 2008. We have to wait for a new version of cygwin.

Georg Brandl has added fchmod() and fchown(). I've contributed lchown but I'm not able to test it on Linux. However it should be available on Mac and some other flavors of Unix.
I've made a quick test of fchmod() and fchown() on my system. They are working as expected.

Issue #1402: PyInterpreterState_Clear() may still invoke user code
(in deallocation of running threads, for example), so the PyGILState_Release()
function must still be functional.
On the other hand, _PyGILState_Fini() only frees memory, and can be called later.
Backport candidate, but only after some experts comment on it.

Partial fix for bug #1306
Multiple reinitializations of Python 3.0 failed on a system without a hardcoded default fs encoding. The patch makes sure that the default fs encoding is freed and reset to NULL on e.g. Linux.
I've also taken the liberty to increase the debugging in Objects/object.c:_Py_ForgetReference(). The method is used to validate the reference chain.
Reinitialization still fails in the 3rd round of my test suite:

Added all PyTypeObjects to the appropriate header files.
Before the patch a lot of internal types weren't available in the header files. The patch exposes the new iterators, views and some other types to all C modules. I've also renamed some of the types and tp_names.
Credits go to Thomas Lamb, who wrote this as a task in the GHOP contest.

The changes to PyMethod_New and the removal of unbound methods breaks ctypes' COMError on Windows. This patch doesn't address the problem but re-enables the import of _ctypes until somebody has time to fix it right. I've no time to dig into it. Also see http://bugs.python.org/issue1505

Removed the API to create unbound methods and simplified the API for bound methods. The signature is PyMethod_New(func, instance).
Also removed im_class and renamed im_self to __self__ and im_func to __func__. im_class can be substituted with method.__self__.__class__.
I've also updated some parts of the documenation.
