- add "char" type for compatibility with HP/UX

- recognize HP/UX syntax &=n etc.
- include errno.h for CYGWIN
- conditionalize the S_IS* macros
- revert the SHT_DYNSYM test that broke the linux stripped binaries test
- lots of Magdir changes
