Support usage component dropping, and more:

- Improve efficiency by not constructing UnitPreferenceMetadata instance
  in binarySearch: reuse an instance passed in.
- Fix stale documentation. (Doc freshness is hard! ;-)
- getPreferenceMetadataIndex actually returns -1 upon failure.
