  45       <p>Welcome to mod_rewrite, the Swiss Army Knife of URL
  46       manipulation!</p>

  48       <p>This module uses a rule-based rewriting engine (based on a
  49       regular-expression parser) to rewrite requested URLs on the
  50       fly. It supports an unlimited number of rules and an
  51       unlimited number of attached rule conditions for each rule to
  52       provide a really flexible and powerful URL manipulation
  53       mechanism. The URL manipulations can depend on various tests,
  54       for instance server variables, environment variables, HTTP
  55       headers, time stamps and even external database lookups in
  56       various formats can be used to achieve granular URL
  57       matching.</p>

  59       <p>This module operates on the full URLs (including the
  60       path-info part) both in per-server context
  61       (<code>httpd.conf</code>) and per-directory context
  62       (<code>.htaccess</code>) and can even generate query-string
  63       parts on result. The rewritten result can lead to internal
  64       sub-processing, external request redirection or even to an
  65       internal proxy throughput.</p>
